The multi-function Multistrada - Ducati Multistrada News

THE Ducati Multistrada was released in 2003 as a niche machine capable of covering the whole spectrum of motorcycling.

Sports riders could utilise the traditional Ducati trellis frame and pliant suspension while touring types have an upright riding position, 170 mile tank range and a choice of factory designed luggage.

At £7,600 it is not priced as a commuter but everyday use is a possibility due to the high bars and narrow profile. It goes to show that an all-round motorcycle need not be staid and dull.

Powered by the 1,000cc motor that features in the Monster S2R, 1000 SS and new Sports Classic range, it is one of the nicest engines in Ducati's range. With only 82bhp on tap some may think it lacks performance but a top whack in the region of 130mph is respectable and there is plenty of low-down grunt in the Ducati tradition.

Point the Multistrada at a twisty road with a few pot-holes and it will surprise many sports bikes. The soft suspension is not fazed by the excellent brakes, the wide bars help when hauling the bike through the bends and the twin cylinder engine pulls well on the straights.

When released the Multistrada had few contemporaries, but now the market is being flooded with similar multi-purpose machines.

KTM has the Super Duke and 950 SM while BMW's GS range and K1200S could be alternatives as well as the more street orientated Monster from Ducati. Add the Tuorno and Speed Triple to the equation and as you can see the choice is endless.

Where the Multistrada scores, however, is in its abilities as a true all-rounder. That comfortable seat - new for this year and much better than the original - and easy riding position make it a better touring proposition than the opposition.

Point it south, take a ferry trip, blast to the Alps and you will be in better shape than most. Then you can still have fun in the mountains with the best of them.

The styling may not be to everyone's taste, but since its launch it's sort of grown on me. Everything is designed with a reason in mind and three years down the line it still looks fresh and new.

The market may be awash with naked, niche machines but, for my money, the Multistrada makes a lot of sense.
